As a small business, we are always on the lookout for tools that add value to our business and we believe Square does just that!

If you are looking for a credit card processing company you have many choices to select from and we have tried many of them too, Including PayPal, Spark (from CapitalOne), Stripe and many other traditional services, but the best one we have found for our business is Square!

Our photography company would be classified as a small business, and we know that money can be tight at times and having access to your money as quickly as possible and as cheaply as possible is important to small businesses like ours.

First of all why is accepting credit cards important to your business? There are several reasons for it; one is just the convenience of it for both you and your clients. I don’t know about you, but time is money for me, if I have to cut an invoice, mail it, wait for the check to come in, drive it down to the bank and then wait for it to clear, well that’s all time. That’s time you could be doing something else to bring in more money.

Time is money for your clients too, paying by credit card is fast, easy and painless, most people would rather use a credit card either for points or for tracking purposes. Whatever their reason it is clear that the use of credit cards is here to stay.

Second is the IRS reporting; I hate tracking down 1099’s every year. Under IRS rules, if a commercial client pays you by credit card, the credit card processing company will handle everything with a 1099-k, see below:

“Form 1099-K. Payments made with a credit card or payment card and certain other types of payments, including third party network transactions, must be reported on Form 1099-K by the payment settlement entity under section 6050W and are not subject to reporting on Form 1099-MISC. See the separate Instructions for Form 1099-K.”

Okay besides gettting quick access to your money at competive rates and Square dealing with all the IRS reporting, what else do you get? A really slick web interface and mobile apps for your phone and iPad. They truly make it easy to stay on top of your daily transactions!

Fees:

Okay, this is the real important part. Unlike other credit card services, there is NO monthly service fee, let me repeat that, there is NO, monthly service fee, Period! Square charges the following:

2.75% per swipe, dip or tap
3.5% + 15¢ Per Keyed In Transaction

If your business does more than $250,000, Square will work with you to devise a rate plan that is suitable for your business.

Our Experience:

We have been using Square since they opened their doors. It was a tad bumpy in the beginning but overall our experience has been fantastic. We use a variety of services they offer and we are involved in a few beta programs too. These guys have really knocked this out of the park. We are really happy with them. We know that people have options but if you are just starting out or are a seasoned pro, we would highly recommend them, especially if you do a lot of remote transactions.

Did you know?

Besides being able to Swipe and Dip Credit Cards, Square also works with Apple Pay! That’s right, you can say you accept Apple Pay by using Square’s new blue tooth reader!
